A Comparison of Fortinet Firewalls: FG-100F-BDL-950-12, FG-100F-BDL-950-36, FG-200F, and FG-200F-BDL-950-36

Fortinet firewalls are widely used in networking environments for their security, performance, and scalability features. However, not all Fortinet firewalls are the same. Depending on the needs and budget of the organization, different models may offer different benefits and drawbacks. In this article, we will compare four popular Fortinet firewalls: FG-100F-BDL-950-12, FG-100F-BDL-950-36, FG-200F, and FG-200F-BDL-950-36.

FG-100F-BDL-950-12 and FG-100F-BDL-950-36

These two firewalls are part of the FortiGate 100F series, which are designed for small to medium-sized businesses or branch offices that need reliable and secure network protection. They both have 22 Gigabit Ethernet ports and two 10G SFP+ ports. They also support Power over Ethernet (PoE), which can deliver up to 15.4W of power per port to power devices such as IP phones, cameras, and wireless access points. The main difference between them is the subscription duration. The FG-100F-BDL-950-12 comes with a 1-year subscription to the FortiGuard 360 Protection bundle, while the FG-100F-BDL-950-36 comes with a 3-year subscription to the same bundle.

The FortiGuard 360 Protection bundle includes:

  • FortiGuard Advanced Malware Protection (AMP), which provides real-time protection against known and unknown malware threats.
  • FortiGuard Application Control, which identifies and controls thousands of applications and categories based on their behavior and risk level.
  • FortiGuard Web Filtering, which blocks access to malicious or inappropriate websites based on their content and reputation.
  • FortiGuard Antispam, which filters out unwanted or malicious emails based on their sender, subject, and content.
  • FortiGuard Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), which detects and blocks network attacks based on signatures, anomalies, and reputation.
  • FortiGuard Security Rating Service, which assesses and improves the security posture of the network based on best practices and recommendations.
  • FortiGuard Industrial Security Service, which protects industrial control systems and critical infrastructure from cyber threats.
  • FortiGuard Sandbox Service, which analyzes suspicious files in a safe environment to detect zero-day threats.
  • FortiCare 24x7 Support Service, which provides technical assistance and software updates around the clock.

Some of the common features of these firewalls are:

  • FortiOS operating system, which provides a unified and intuitive interface for managing the firewall and its features.
  • FortiASIC NP6 processor, which enables high-performance firewalling and VPN encryption/decryption.
  • FortiASIC CP9 processor, which enables high-performance content inspection and threat prevention.
  • SD-WAN capabilities, which optimize the network performance and reliability by dynamically routing traffic based on application requirements and network conditions.
  • Cloud integration, which allows the firewall to connect to various cloud services such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, etc.
  • These firewalls are suitable for small to medium-sized businesses or branch offices that need reliable and secure network protection with PoE support and a comprehensive subscription bundle.

FG-200F and FG-200F-BDL-950-36

These two firewalls are part of the FortiGate 200F series, which are designed for medium to large-sized businesses or campus networks that need high-performance and scalable network protection. They both have 18 Gigabit Ethernet ports and four 10G SFP+ ports. They do not support PoE, but they have a higher firewall throughput and concurrent sessions than the FortiGate 100F series. The main difference between them is the subscription duration. The FG-200F comes with no subscription bundle, while the FG-200F-BDL-950-36 comes with a 3-year subscription to the FortiGuard 360 Protection bundle.
