A Comparison of Cisco Switches: WS-C2960X-48LPD-L, WS-C2960X-48LPS-L, WS-C3850-24T-E, and WS-C3850-24XS-S

Cisco switches are widely used in networking environments for their reliability, performance, and security features. However, not all Cisco switches are the same. Depending on the needs and budget of the organization, different models may offer different benefits and drawbacks. In this article, we will compare four popular Cisco switches: WS-C2960X-48LPD-L, WS-C2960X-48LPS-L, WS-C3850-24T-E, and WS-C3850-24XS-S.

WS-C2960X-48LPD-L and WS-C2960X-48LPS-L

These two switches are part of the Cisco Catalyst 2960-X series, which are designed for enterprise-class access layer switching. They both have 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports and two 10G SFP+ uplinks. They also support Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+), which can deliver up to 30W of power per port to power devices such as IP phones, cameras, and wireless access points. The main difference between them is the available PoE power budget. The WS-C2960X-48LPD-L has a total PoE power budget of 370W, while the WS-C2960X-48LPS-L has a total PoE power budget of 740W. This means that the latter can power more devices or devices with higher power requirements.

Some of the common features of these switches are:

Cisco FlexStack-Plus stacking, which allows up to eight switches to be stacked together and managed as a single unit, with up to 80Gbps of stack bandwidth.

Cisco IOS LAN Base software, which provides basic Layer 2 switching features such as VLANs, Spanning Tree Protocol, Port Security, and Quality of Service (QoS).

Cisco EnergyWise technology, which helps reduce energy consumption by monitoring and controlling the power usage of network devices.

Cisco Smart Install, which simplifies the deployment and configuration of new switches by using a master switch as a template.

These switches are suitable for small to medium-sized businesses or branch offices that need reliable and secure access layer switching with PoE+ support.

WS-C3850-24T-E and WS-C3850-24XS-S

These two switches are part of the Cisco Catalyst 3850 series, which are designed for converged wired and wireless access layer switching. They both have 24 ports, but the WS-C3850-24T-E has 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports, while the WS-C3850-24XS-S has 24 10G SFP+ ports. They also have four 10G/40G QSFP+ uplinks that can be used for stacking or connecting to other devices. They do not support PoE+, but they have an integrated wireless controller that can manage up to 50 wireless access points and 2000 wireless clients.

Some of the common features of these switches are:

Cisco StackWise-480 stacking, which allows up to nine switches to be stacked together and managed as a single unit, with up to 480Gbps of stack bandwidth.

Cisco IOS IP Base software, which provides advanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching features such as routing protocols, multicast routing, IPv6 support, and QoS.

Cisco Unified Access Data Plane (UADP) ASIC, which enables high-performance switching and supports programmable features such as Flexible NetFlow, MACsec encryption, and TrustSec security.

Cisco Smart Operations, which provides tools for network automation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and security.

These switches are suitable for large enterprises or campus networks that need high-performance and scalable access layer switching with integrated wireless management.
